English is THE world language par excellence. No other language is spoken by more people. Although there are more native Chinese speakers than English speakers, more people speak English as a foreign language. In addition, it is the lingua franca of business, research, and the media. Therefore, it hardly seems surprising that over half of the world’s internet content is available in English, but only 1.3 per cent in Chinese.

Given this dominance, it is easy to forget that the world is teeming with English dialects. A Scotsman may have trouble understanding a Texan – and vice versa. But there are also differences in the written language. Some words are spelt differently, e.g. “colour” in the UK, but “colour” in the USA. Other words differ completely in their meaning. In the USA, “chips” are crisps, but in the UK they are French fries.

Such differences can be learnt or looked up quite easily. It is more difficult with cultural particularities. Non-native speakers rarely grasp the full range of associations and meanings of English words and sentences. However, this is precisely what is needed for professional localisation and translation. British or American English

Do I have to choose or are there alternatives?

A translation of corporate communication should always keep the target market in mind. If the target audience is primarily in the UK, the text should be translated into British English. If it is primarily in the United States, the text should be translated into American English.

Things get more difficult for companies that operate internationally and whose readership consists primarily of people whose native language is not English. Here we recommend localising the texts as little as possible. Typical American or British references and idioms should be avoided as far as possible. If this sounds like a sensible strategy for your company, feel free to ask us about international English.

Localise English texts: yes or no?

When you need more than an English translation.

The English language is rich in phrases and idioms that vary in meaning locally or often cannot be translated literally. When a CEO in the USA says “Let’s table that item” in a meeting, he wants to put the item in question on the back burner for the time being because there are more important things on the agenda. When a politician in the British parliament says this, he means the opposite. He is asking for a motion to be placed on the agenda, for example. In a text, the phrase can therefore cause confusion if it is aimed at an international readership. Depending on the context, a professional English translator will decide whether it might not be better to replace the phrase with another one or to deliberately include it.

Localising an English text involves more than just translating it. Inverted commas, metrics and number formats are adapted. If region-specific phrases and idioms are available, these are favoured where necessary. Sometimes, however, entire passages have to be revised in terms of content if the cultural norms of a target market regulate or even prohibit the use of certain topics. For example, if a German source text contains slightly offensive but still acceptable allusions by German standards, this may no longer be appropriate in some Muslim countries or even in the American “Bible Belt”. They should be paraphrased or avoided.

Localisation therefore blurs the boundaries between editing, copywriting and translating. However, a full localisation is often beyond the capabilities of non-native speakers. Even someone who learnt English at school at an early age will miss many nuances, ambiguities and references. That’s why we only use native-speaker specialist translators for English translations. The important thing for you as a potential client is that the more you tell us about the target group and target market of your text, the more reliably our translators can avoid potential pitfalls.

For example, if your text is to be used as part of a marketing campaign in the USA, US-specific phrases and references could make the campaign more effective. The text will be more likeable and familiar to the audience. If your text is to be used internationally, the English translator should “de-localise” it, i.e. replace local-specific content or avoid it from the outset.

As a rule of thumb: the richer the text is in language- and culture-specific references, phrases and idioms, the more advisable localisation is.
