CSV, XML and XLIFF

Text export in content management systems.

Which formats are suitable for the necessary data exchange?

From your website to a translation. From a translation to your website.

So, the decision has been made: You need an international website. A good move. With many content management systems to choose from, it’s easy to get a website up and running these days. But once that’s done, what’s next? It’s quite simple, really. You send the text to our translation agency – and we do the translation. Voilà! However, that’s where the simplicity may end. Not all CMS make it easy to export all relevant text. And you probably want to avoid importing the translation of each page one by one. Bulk imports can be iffy as well. So, it generally is a good idea to hire a translation agency that has your back, one that can help you should there be any problems or even do the necessary export and import for you.

As a first step, we’ll provide information about the formats suitable for export and important as well as on how you can export text files from various content management systems.

Of course, we will translate your text regardless of the file format. However, some formats are particularly suitable. Others are difficult to work with, which can unnecessarily increase the cost. So, the right choice of format will make your life easier as well as ours.

Popular content management systems (CMS) such as TYPO3 and WordPress support the quick and easy export of texts – for example as CSV, XML or XLIFF files. We then translate directly in the file. And you can simply insert or import them into your multilingual CMS.

If your content management system is capable of exporting XLIFF files, we recommend this format. The reason: it is supported by the state-of-the-art CAT systems that our translators use, such as memoQ or Trados.

Two benefits: time and cost efficiency, especially for websites with highly dynamic content. Translation memories can be created more quickly. This, in turn, allows for faster updates later on should you need minor adjustments later on, for example. It also may reduce the price because identical text passages only need to be translated once.

CMS instructions

You use a content management system but don’t know how to export text content? No problem! Because our short instructions for the most popular systems explain how to do it – quickly and easily.

HTML and PHP

Two classics - for a reason.

In Germany, almost 40% of website owners do not use a CMS. Some prefer to code everything from scratch. Some just love the full control. Others just prefer elegant, short code, for content management systems always come with a ton of unnecessary code. We understand these attitudes and approaches. Simply send us your HTML or PHP file and we get to work.

One advantage: we also translate metatags and image descriptions, which some CMS do not automatically export. They may not be visible to visitors, but they are to search engines, after all. Translation, localisation and search engine optimisation in one fell swoop. Could be worse, no? Plus, you can upload the translation directly, without cumbersome copying and pasting into the source code.

Bypass potential format and data exchange problems

And other solutions tailored to your needs.

Sometimes, however, it is not quite that simple. Maybe you haven’t yet installed the necessary plug-ins or modules for your CMS. Or you think your content management system is already complicated enough and prefer to not install more plug-ins to keep Google happy. Still, we’ll keep the internationalisation of your website simple. Provided our translation agency is allowed access to your system, we are able to edit and translate text directly in your content management system. Customised solutions are a given.

What about data protection and security? We take care of that. It’s not for nothing that our processes are ISO-17100 certified. Of course, you should be able to expect that from a professional translation service provide.
